Persistence pays off against bad boss

After twelve months of fighting a bad boss, steward Jeff Recht was successful in reaching an agreement to transfer an associate information systems analyst to another supervisor. Jeff is a Unit 1 Classification Bargaining Unit Representative (CBUR) for Sacramento.

"The boss broke nearly all of the rules in the book," says Jeff. "He would humiliate the member in front of his peers; he required that the employee check in every time he left his desk - even if it was just a restroom break; he micro-managed and monitored constantly."

Recent grievance wins for unit 1 members


About 2% of Unit 1's 45,000 members have pending grievances. The four departments with the largest number of grievances are: Employment Development Department (EDD) -- 327 cases; California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) -- 95 cases; Caltrans -- 93 cases; and State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF) -- 66 cases.

Layoffs delayed after member uncovers possible CDCR fraud

More than 800 Local 1000 members have received a 30-day reprieve from being laid-off. The delay comes after an alert prison teacher discovered that the state was involved in a possible mail fraud scheme.
