Turning frustration into positive action

darlene_estey_web.jpg
Darlene Estey first got active in Local 1000 because she was mad--at her union.

"I used to be a fee payer, and I was angry about a dues increase so I became a member and got active," said Estey, a Bargaining Unit 1 senior compliance representative with the Franchise Tax Board. "Once I saw how the union worked to help people, I just got more and more involved."

That was in 2007. Since then she has become a steward, served as District Labor Council 786 president and is currently taking a six-month union leave to represent members in the Member Resource Center (MRC).

Propositions 30 and 32: Time to turn up the heat

Members are reaching voters, but much more work is ahead

Phone bankingWith less than two months before the critical November election, Local 1000 members are fired up on Proposition 32 and 30.

Volunteers have made more than 85,000 phone calls urging voters to vote no on Proposition 32 - which would cripple our ability to defend ourselves and our pensions from political attacks - and yes on Proposition 30 - which would implement a small tax increase on the wealthiest Californians to fund schools and public safety.

As schools open their doors for the new academic year, Local 1000 opened its doors to provide children the tools they need to succeed in class--backpacks filled with school supplies. "Giving back to our members and communities is a big part of our vision at Local 1000. By starting these kids out right, we are investing in their future--in our future," said Unit 1 member leader Cruz Naranjo (pictured right) at the Aug. 25 event in Sacramento. Making a difference in our community

"State workers are not just a part of California's infrastructure ... we are your neighbors." --Barbara Alves, Bargaining Unit 1 member leader

A community landmark is park_cleanup_web2.jpgbecoming vital once again for kids and families as Local 1000 members and staff volunteer at a neighborhood ballpark to restore it to become the next "field of dreams." Throughout the years, members and staff have regularly volunteered to clean up parks, creeks and build houses with Habitat for Humanity. "Local 1000 members are doing this to give back. We, as state workers, are not just a part of California's infrastructure--we are very much a part of California's communities. We are your neighbors," said Bargaining Unit 1 member leader Barbara Alves.

4th Annual Live United Toilet Paper Drive

toiletpaper_web.jpgNonprofits spend thousands on toilet paper every year - help us collect 125,000 rolls!

Local 1000 members and staff are collecting toilet paper donations that help nonprofit organizations in our community. Nonprofits spend thousands of dollars supplying families in need with toilet paper, and last year Local 1000 collected over 10,000 rolls to decrease that cost.

You can help the effort by collecting toilet paper rolls at home and in your worksite. If you do not have a collection bin at your worksite, you may drop off your donation at the Local 1000 Union Hall, 1325 S St, Sacramento, anytime before 3:30 p.m. on June 14.

If you would like a collection bin delivered to your worksite, please contact Melvin Stewart at mstewart@seiu1000.org or 831.236.2224.

Your vote makes a difference

Yvonne_Walker_small.jpgA letter from Local 1000 President Yvonne Walker

Dear Local 1000 member:

To rebuild California, we need a governor with common sense, the ability to bring people together to solve problems and get things done, and a fundamental respect for the services provided by dedicated state employees.

Volunteering: just as important as voting

Voter registrationIt's not enough for us to simply vote for candidates who support state employees and state services...

We need to get active and reach out to other voters and encourage them to vote for candidates who value government instead of trying to destroy vital services.
